ことができる

できる is the potential form of the verb する (to do). ことができる is the grammatical structure we use when we want to express our ability to do something. It expresses both the ability and the possibility of doing something. It is the equivalent of 'can' or 'could' in English.

こと is the verb nominalizer; が is the subject particle and できる (できます) means 'can'.

In the case of nouns with する, like りょうりする (to cook), since できる is the potential form of する, we cannot use できる and する together; する will be erased, and we will use the noun only.

りょうりができない。

Ryouri ga dekinai.

I cannot cook.

​

In expressing capability or ability, できる will mean that we are able or not able to perform certain actions.

​

英語をはなすことができる。

Eigo o hanasu koto ga dekiru.

I can speak English.

中国語をはなすことができません。

Chuugokugo o hanasu koto ga dekimasen.

I cannot speak Chinese.

In these cases, we can use only できる.

​

英語ができます。

Eigo ga dekimasu.

I can speak English.

​

できる can also express the possibility of doing something.

​

このレストランではWifiをつかうことができます。

Kono resutoran de wa Wifi o tsukau koto ga dekimasu.

We can use the Wifi at this restaurant.

今日はたいふうでどこにも行くことができません。

Kyou wa taifuu de dokonimo iku koto ga dekimasen.

I cannot go out today because of the typhoon.

ことができない is often used for prohibition; it is not allowed to do something or it is forbidden to do something.

学交ではタバコをすうことができません。

Gakkou de wa tabako o suu koto ga dekimasen.

You cannot smoke in the school.
